Limagrain is a leader in agricultural innovation and is dedicated to improving seed quality and crop performance. Through cutting-edge research and strong industry partnerships, they are at the forefront of developing technologies that enhance the efficiency and accuracy of agricultural production. Their expertise in pulse crops has played a key role in the advancement of automated quality assessment systems, ensuring high standards for lentil classification.
The Challenge
Lentil quality assessment is crucial for breeders, food processors, and exporters, but traditional manual inspection is labor-intensive and inconsistent. To address this, we at Vibe Imaging Analytics, developed the Vibe QM3i analyzer, an advanced automated system specifically designed for breeding programs. This system goes beyond basic visual inspection, it classifies and quantifies lentils based on key characteristics such as size distribution, color recognition, and various damage categories, including broken lentils, foreign material, dark-colored defects, and brown discoloration. Every parameter is precisely measured and quantified as numerical values or percentages, ensuring breeders receive reliable, objective data to make informed selection decisions.
This innovation was refined through collaboration with Jaenet Ter Schure, a leading Pulse Breeder from Limagrain Cereals Canada Research, whose pulse breeding program is co-funded by Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG). Her expertise has been instrumental in validating the system to ensure it meets real industry needs. By championing this technology, Jaenet is driving a new era of precision and efficiency in lentil quality assessment, ensuring Limagrain Cereals Canada Research remains at the forefront of agricultural innovation.

How It Works: Precision in Every Step
The Vibe QM3i analyzer is built to provide detailed, consistent, and actionable insights for lentil breeding programs. By leveraging advanced image processing and machine learning, we ensure that every lentil is analyzed with unparalleled accuracy. Here’s how it works:
🔹 High-Resolution Image Capture: Lentil samples are photographed under carefully controlled lighting conditions, ensuring precise and consistent imaging.
🔹 Smart Analysis: The software meticulously examines each lentil, detecting key characteristics such as size, color classification (red or green), and identifying any defects.
🔹 Automated Classification: The system recognizes and categorizes damages, including broken lentils, foreign material, dark-colored damages, and brown discoloration, generating objective quality scores.
🔹 Quantitative Data Output: The results aren’t just visual; every parameter is measured and expressed in numbers or percentages, providing breeders with tangible data to guide selection.
🔹 Digitized Data Records: Each analysis is automatically logged, creating a comprehensive digital record. This ensures full traceability, simplifies reporting and enables long-term insights into breeding strategies.
🔹 Instant, Reliable, and Consistent Results: Quality grading is performed in real-time, eliminating delays and inconsistencies associated with manual inspection.
Why It Matters
This game-changing technology brings significant advantages over conventional grading techniques:
🔹 Speed & Accuracy: Automated assessment eliminates human error and dramatically accelerates processing times.
🔹 Standardization & Consistency: Every batch is evaluated using the same objective criteria, ensuring fairness and reliability.
🔹 Size-Based Classification Aligned with Market Classes: Among the traits evaluated, lentil size is especially important. In Canada, lentils are grouped into market classes that range from extra small to large. By providing precise, objective measurements of seed size, the system enables breeders to align their selections with specific commercial categories, ensuring new varieties meet both agronomic goals and end-user expectations.
🔹 Digitized Data-Driven Insights: The system provides breeders, processors, and exporters with crucial quality metrics in a fully digitized format. This not only empowers users to make informed, data-based decisions but also simplifies reporting, enhances traceability, and enables advanced analysis for continuous improvement in breeding strategies
Impact & The Road Ahead
The Vibe QM3i analyzer is already transforming lentil breeding, making the classification process faster, more accurate, more informative, and more efficient. By automating quality assessment, we empower breeders to make data-driven decisions with greater confidence.
Looking ahead, we plan to expand this system to other pulse crops, further revolutionizing agricultural breeding programs. The future of pulse quality assessment is here, efficient, automated, and data-driven, providing breeders with the tools they need to cultivate the best-performing varieties for tomorrow’s agricultural challenges.
