Plant Breeding Technician

This hands-on research operations role supports plant breeding and production programs through direct involvement in the plant production hub. It is ideal for someone who enjoys being actively involved in the day-to-day operations while managing multiple projects and priorities. The successful candidate will lead and contribute to plant production workflows, ensure efficient resource use, and collaborate across teams to drive production outcomes. Essential duties and responsibilities

  • Coordinate indoor plant production activities, including planting schedules, growing conditions, pollinations, harvests, and shipping.
  • Drive project planning and execution to ensure milestones and timelines are consistently met.
  • Maintain comprehensive project documentation, tracking progress, resource allocation, and outcomes for intensive plant growth programs.
  • Balance competing priorities across multiple initiatives, applying project management principles to optimize time and resource use.
  • Execute tissue culture procedures, including preparation of plant tissue culture media and stock solutions.
  • Collect leaf tissue and seeds for molecular analysis, ensuring they are delivered on schedule for analysis.
  • Coordinate activities and training to uphold equipment safety and project personnel safety in compliance with company, provincial, and government regulations.
  • As a member of a small breeding station team, participate in diverse tasks, including field and seed lab breeding activities as needed.

Qualifications Required

  • Previous experience in wheat and or pulse field crops within a greenhouse, or growth chamber setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Qualifications preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in plant science, agronomy, horticulture, or related field. Equivalent job experience will also be considered.
  • Familiarity with aseptic techniques and plant tissue culture methods.
  • Background in agricultural research.
  • Experience operating or adjusting small, powered equipment or common hand tools.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a willingness to engage in all LCRC breeding program duties.
